Protestant regional association sells Frankfurt property to Becken for joint project development

  • Sale of an approximately 2,450 square metre section
  • Joint project development of the Matthäus-Areal at the Friedrich-Ebert-Anlage
  • Architectural competition to determine the further planning

Frankfurt/ Hamburg, 10 July 2020: The Evangelical Regional Association of Frankfurt and Offenbach has sold part of its property at Friedrich-Ebert-Anlage 33 and Hohenstaufenstraße 30 and 32 in Frankfurt am Main to the Hamburg-based real estate company Becken, which operates throughout Germany. The property has a total area of around 3,100 square meters, of which a partial area of around 2,450 square meters was sold to Becken. The remaining area of around 650 square metres,
most of which is occupied by the Matthäuskirche, remains the property of the Evangelischer Regionalverband.

The existing Matthäuskirche is to be demolished under consideration of the protection of historical monuments and replaced by a new church building for the Evangelische Hoffnungsgemeinde. In the next step, a joint architectural competition is to be held for the new church building and for the new building on the retail property, and the results and the utilization concept are to be coordinated with the City of Frankfurt.

Pastor Dr. Achim Knecht, city dean and chairman of the board of the Evangelical Regional Association, emphasizes: "The new building of the Matthäuskirche at this prominent location between business and social hotspot shows the lasting significance of Jesus' message of God's love for all people. We are glad that we have found a partner in Becken Development to support us in the constructional realisation of this project".

Dominik Tenhumberg, Managing Director of Becken Development GmbH, says: "The greater Frankfurt area, together with Offenbach and Wiesbaden, is an attractive investment location for us. We are delighted that, together with the Evangelical Regional Association, we will be shaping the quarter around the old police headquarters".

In the new building on the sales plot, 12 percent of the area is to be earmarked for social housing or alternatively for social purposes at the request of the regional association. With the new building at this prominent location between the main railway station and the exhibition centre, the Protestant Church in Frankfurt and Offenbach wants to be present with the Christian message for all sections of the population.
